(at the Finish line of the 2008 Lady's Skipper's Race) It must be the sign of the times. Two years ago 10 boats competed for Chula Vista Yacht Club’s Lady Skipper Perpetual Trophy. This year however, five ladies showed up for Saturday morning skipper’s meeting. Yet, enthusiasm ran high April 19 th as the racers were given their last minute instructions and start times. The range of skipper experience varied from Sarah Davis, a very competitive junior sailor to PHRF veteran racer Nanci Henehan. Others with less experience were inspired to prove their sailing abilities against tough competition Most of the 5 participating boats had not seen action since the last club race in November of last year. The day began cold and overcast with 12 to 15 mph winds out of the west. The pursuit race saw the highest handicap boats start first. Betsy and Brian Shirk aboard Andstar a beautiful Baba 30 started at high noon from inside the harbor and headed out on the 11.3 mile course. Followed closely was Debra Connors VYC in her Pearson 26. Minutes later, Vern and Teri Kleist SGYC aboard Via Mar, an Ericson 30 crossed the start line for the open waters of the South Bay. Our very own Glen Burnes with Sarah and Jennifer Davis aboard Mark Clements’s Bail a Dahi worked their way through the start line. Finally, fourteen minute after the first boat started, Ken and Nanci Henehan aboard their C&C 33 An dara Claddagh headed out. Less than two hours later, it was An dara Claddagh that chased down all of the other boats and crossed the finish line first. Betsy and Brian finished first in the CVHF class. It must have been those informative Thursday evening sailing classes hosted by Don and Susan Johnson that propelled Betsy andBrian to their impressive win. Thank you to Dick Wold for officiating the race and Glen Burnes for his help with the SI’s. Special thanks to Michele Wold for staying behind and cooking the after race meal. Next race is Jack and Jill on Saturday May 17 th . Please make plan to join us out on the water. Sailing Instructions and entry forms can be found upstairs on the sailboard or downloaded from the link on this page. Time to go Sailing........
